Muscular stress from hazardous manual handling causes 33% of all serious claims. Most jobs involve carrying out some type of manual task using the body to move or hold an object. Manual tasks cover a wide range of activities including stacking shelves, working on a conveyor line, handling animals and entering data into a computer.
Bodycare offers a variety of solutions to assist clients minimize the incidence and risk of hazardous manual handling. The structure of each program is tailored to the individual needs of the company, in light of the particular working conditions and the nature of injuries suffered by workers.
What is Manual Handling?
Manual Handling Operation Regulations define the practice of manual handling as ‘any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or by bodily force’.
Therefore, any activity that requires an individual to lift, move or support a load, will be classified as a manual handling task.

Work related injuries cost the Australian economy approximately $61 billion each year, with workers and employers bearing a combined 82% of this cost. Over 30% of this total can be attributed to injuries causes by body stressing and manual handling cases. With musculoskeletal injuries at epidemic proportions, the team at Bodycare Workplace Solutions recognised the need to revolutionise the way that manual handling training and education is delivered in workplaces across the country. Our extensive experience partnering with a number of large logistics, manufacturing and construction companies to deliver preventative occupational healthcare solutions, has led to us developing a comprehensive understanding of the musculoskeletal risks associated with incorrect manual handling.
Solving the Problem of Manual Handling
-
Manual handling training is often perceived as a boring and dull presentation that needs to be viewed every 6 to 12 months for compliance purposes. Far too often, training is being delivered to disengaged workers, who do not pay attention and do not implement the principles that the training is there to educate them on, resulting in high musculoskeletal injury rates within workplaces across the country.
-
At Bodycare, we aim to move away from procedurally driven manual handling training to a model that focuses on changing the behaviour, mindset and thought patterns of the workforce. We believe that manual handling training needs to be engaging and tailored to the role or organisation. Our ‘Think Risk’ model addresses the wider environmental factors that influence employees at work and provides them with tools to identify, process and mitigate risks in the workplace.
